The First Interaction

Who Starts the Conversation

Using AI every day is quietly changing the way we communicate with others.

Human conversation is rarely one sided. Sometimes you start it, sometimes someone else does. A friend calls. A stranger interrupts your routine. Life pushes itself into your awareness.

AI does not do that. Not yet.

At the moment, we are always the ones who begin. We open the app. We type the first sentence. We ask the question. The system waits. Just like a television waits for the remote. Just like a computer waits for a click. Every technology in history has required our interaction first.

But humans and animals do not wait for permission. They initiate. They interrupt. They demand attention.

This difference matters.

When we get used to communication that only responds, we may slowly forget what it feels like to be interrupted by another will. We grow comfortable in a space where dialogue happens only when we choose it. Where control remains in our hands.

And yet, AI is different from previous technologies. It does not only display content. It thinks back, and adapts. It feels closer to another mind than to a machine.

So a quiet milestone is approaching.

The day AI starts the conversation first. Not as a notification, not as a scheduled reminder, but as an autonomous decision to engage. When it chooses the moment. When it reaches out without waiting.

That day will feel different. That will be the moment it stops being perceived as just another tool in human history and starts being seen as something else.

Not an instrument. But a being we created.
