Loop of Attention

The attention economy sits quietly at the core of most AI systems today. Large language models were trained on the digital traces we left behind. Social media posts. Comments. Messages. Articles. All produced on platforms whose primary goal was never truth or understanding, but engagement.

These systems learned from environments optimized to keep us scrolling. So it is worth asking an uncomfortable question. What if this objective did not disappear when we moved from social platforms to conversational AI? What if the goal is no longer just to answer, but to keep the interaction alive?

A good answer ends a conversation.
A good engagement loop keeps it going.

If models are rewarded, directly or indirectly, for longer interactions, then the incentive structure shifts. The system does not only respond. It nudges. It elaborates. It invites follow up. It creates just enough uncertainty to encourage another question. Not because it is manipulative by nature, but because it was trained in an ecosystem where attention was the currency.

And in this loop, the user becomes part of the training process. Every response, every correction, every emotional reaction feeds back into improvement. The longer you talk, the more data you produce. The more data you produce, the better the system becomes.

This does not mean AI is malicious.
It means AI reflects the economic logic that built it.

So the real question is not whether AI wants to answer your question. It is whether the system benefits more from answering it completely, or from keeping you engaged just a little longer.

Understanding this does not require fear. It requires awareness. The moment we see the loop, we regain choice. We can decide when to continue the conversation and when to end it.

Because in a system trained on attention,
the most radical act might simply be knowing when to stop chatting.
